Grüner Veltliner

Grüner Veltliner is the most famous white grape grown in Austria.  It is crisp, dry, floral, and tart.

It is rumored to go well with many cheeses including Appenzeller, Brin D'Amour, Caerphilly, Cheddar, Chimay, Double Gloucester, Garrotxa, Harbourne Blue, Munster, Livarot, Ibores, Mahon, and Vacherin Fribourgeois.

Berger Grüner Veltliner  $9 for an entire liter at Grapevine. Tart, tart, tart! I liked it, but the acidity was a little overwhelming. I didn't try it with cheese.

Hirsch Veltliner #1 2003  (Tasted in 2004) $13.75 at Austin Wine Merchant. 11.5% alcohol. I had to have this wine because the label on the bottle was so cute. It has a picture of a deer with horns and little spots with its tongue sticking out!  Every vintage is supposed to have a different, crazy picture on the label. It comes with a screw top. Hirsch means "stag," and it's also the name of the winemaker, Johannes Hirsch. This comes from Kamptal, Austria. http://www.weingut-hirsch.at. This wine is supposed to be elegant and fresh with spicy notes.
